The Great Wall

I started reading the book today and I think Kristina Karlsson might have the answers! Or at least, she might help me find the answers. I only managed to get through the introduction but she totally spoke to my heart. Some quotes from the book to inspire you. (I do love a good quote!)

Understand that the right to choose your own path is a sacred privilege. Use it. Dwell in possibility! Oprah Winfrey

"For as long as I can remember. I've had the restless desire to live an amazing life - to travel the world, meet inspiring people, experience wonderful things, learn and do something meaningful with this one life I've been given." I sooooo relate to this one.

"A dream life is not about creating a fantasy or living someone else's life or having a 'perfect life,' whatever that might mean. It's about becoming something more, not something else. It's about progress, not perfection. Most importantly it's about connecting with your unique potential, taking time out to imagine how you want your future to be for you and your loved ones, and then creating it."

For some reason I got a bit teary while reading her heartfelt introduction. It could be just that time of the month or perhaps the result of being in lockdown for the last 15 weeks, but I think it's something more. I think she reminded me of who I used to be.

I have first-hand experience of how the power of one decision can totally transform your life. In 2002, I made one decision that changed the course of my history. I chose to leave my safe, boring job in America with the good benefits and plenty of room for promotion and get on a plane to South Korea where I knew one person who ended up living 5 hours away from me. I knew absolutely nothing about Korea except that it was in Asia and I had some Korean American friends so I'd heard about kimchee and Ramen.

Best decision EVER! While there, I went on holiday with my fabulous friend Stacey to China and we climbed the Great Wall. I remember standing on top of the wall with this incredible view and just taking in that moment. I remember thinking how close I had come to not going, to not leaving my comfortable world and what a difference that one decision made.

I made friends in Korea that are still some of my closest and most amazing friends and I met my husband who was definitely the most unexpected and best gift of all. We now have two beautiful children and I never did go back to America.

As my husband is from Cape Town, I'll leave you with a quote from Nelson Mandela. "There is no passion to be found in playing small - in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living." One decision can change the course of your life. Maybe I am just one decision away from re-defining mid-life Karen.
