Great Big Bundle of Potentiality

Writer's picture: Karen PlaatjesKaren Plaatjes

I love Psalm 139 and have been meditating on it more in depth since the start of my career hunt. I have the first few verses printed and hung up in the bathroom so I'm reminded regularly that God knows me, my every thought, my getting up and my sitting down (yes I see the humour in having that hung opposite the toilet). I love that it says He "knitted" me together in my mother's womb. It always makes me think of a granny sitting down and carefully following a pattern. I love that he knows exactly what I am going to do with my life, which gives me hope, as if you've been reading this for any length of time, you know I have no idea what to do yet.

I remember right after I moved to America, we had a choir performance and we sang I Am A Promise. If you aren't familiar with the words, it says, "I am a promise, I am a possibility, I am a promise, with a capital P, I am a great big bundle of potentiality. . .And if you listen you'll hear God's voice. And if you're trying He'll help you make the right choices. You're a promise to be anything God wants you to be. I remember feeling a sense of amazement and excitement in my 10 year old brain that God thought I was a big bundle of potentiality and wondering what exciting things He had in store for my life.

I listened to that song again tonight and felt a nostalgic tug of residual excitement. Although I have to admit it sounds very American dream like after not living in the US for so many years. Here's a link to the Gaither version should you fancy a listen to some good ol' country gospel music. I do believe everyone is full of potential and we are all created to do something meaningful and potentially amazing (even if it's small-scale amazing). Today I'm feeling grateful for a God who already knows where I'm headed so I don't have to stress. A God who knows what I'm capable of and won't leave me in the potentiality phase even though it often feels like that's where I'm stuck.
