As part of my 90 day plan, I need to remain focussed on what I'm trying to accomplish. So today I watched Brendon Burchard's video, How to Stay Focussed on YouTube. I found this really helpful and it's only 11 minutes long so if you have a chance, it's worth a watch. He had three main points.
1. Realise you need to make fewer decisions because the more decisions you make, the more your brain becomes fatigued. The more decisions you tend to make the less effective you're going to be in the long term so minimize the number of decisions you're making. His number one tip for this was it stop browsing! Browsing wipes out your focus and your willpower. Every time you browse, your mind is making a decision to pay attention or not pay attention to every thing you're looking at. It will fatigue your brain because you're focussing on a million things. When you do things online, be intentional and do what you came to do and then get off. Focus on the things that are going to move you forward. It's easier to become distracted, the more distracted you are. You need to learn to focus on one thing at a time and limiting browsing will really help with this.
2. You must define your mission. You need to have an intension for what your next task should be. Figure out what your mission is and work a plan to get you there. Everything else gets a no. Don't take on too many projects because you're not clear about your mission. Define your mission for each day and stick to it. Focus goes out the window when we don't have any progress. If you want to get more focus in your life, get more progress.
3. Once you have your mission, your job is to say no to everything, immediately, for now, always. Say no, just at first just so you can check it against your mission. He recommends not committing to any projects immediately anymore. Take 24 hours and make your decision the next day. Build some criteria for yourself and make sure it fits those criteria before you say yes. You have to value your time and filter things through criteria. You need to make a strong basis for making your decisions. Your job is to get back to a very simple level of life.
I thought about how I make decisions about what to say yes to, and I definitely don't have a list of criteria I run stuff through. I also don't define my mission for the day every day and I get distracted easily and tend to try and focus on too many things at once. I am taking steps in the right direction, but am going to be more aware of this as I go into next week. I totally agree on the fewer decisions point and that goes back to the book I read recently where the lady talked about make decisions once. I'm implementing that in a lot of areas of my life and it is really liberating and does free up my brain power.
I'm heading into this week focussed and looking forward to what it holds.
My quote for the day is
“Focus on your strengths, not your weaknesses.
Focus on your character, not your reputation.
Focus on your blessings, not your misfortunes.”
― Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart
My photo for today is of me in my glasses, the only way these days I can focus while reading.
