Facebook Knows. . .

Writer's picture: Karen PlaatjesKaren Plaatjes

Apparently Facebook knows I'm looking or a job and all the ads that show up are now job related which is sort of creepy. Some of them are offering to sell me a service that will guide my future so I can make six-figures without leaving the comfort of my own home. It's hard to know which thing to throw money at, or whether it's worth spending money at all. Today I was offered two copy writing courses for vastly different sums of money but they both seemed to be selling the same thing.

So I've been keeping track of what I've been doing each day towards the epic job search. In the last week I have started exploring Interior Design, Photography, Becoming a Professional Organiser/Declutterlet, Copywriting and working in Real Estate. I have started following interesting creative people on Instagram (although I forget to look at my feed most days!). I've signed up for a Twitter account. I've updated my photos on social media and I've emailed a whole bunch of people who do jobs I'm interested in to see if anyone is willing to give me some advice. I've sent my CV off for a free critique (depressing). They basically came back and told me with a very salesy marketing pitch that unless I spend $269 I pretty much have no chance of EVER finding a job! I've found out about hidden job markets and listened to loads of podcasts and started my beautiful Kristina Karlsson book. I've had friends email me with job suggestions and I've started a list of jobs to explore further. I've also received some hysterical Karen meme's courtesy of my crazy siblings and it appears I used to have a Karen-esque hair cut back in the day. My sister Jen even suggested I make crazy Karen videos and sent me an example that caused me stress just watching it! Today my lovely friend, Sarah, sent me an actual local job advert that I'm going to apply for as it's a part-time position that sounds interesting - I just need to update my CV first before I apply! I've added four books to my reading list and finally, I signed up for a four week free trial to the Shaw Academy where you can do online classes in some pretty cool stuff so I start learning with them on Sunday.

Will any of this get me any closer to a new job or a way to monetise myself? I have no idea, but it is rather entertaining to write about it all. I have wondered if it will backfire and someone who thought about hiring me, will read this blog and run swiftly in the opposite direction. Will I spend money on online courses that promise me a better work-life balance? Will paid ads on Facebook actually have the answer?

My brother, Phil, sent this meme to me today. This is not me, just in case you're wondering, but does look a bit like me so he thought he'd customise it. Keep in mind this comes from a man who wore a crocheted Viking hat during his zoom meeting with senior management.
