Essentialism

I had a meeting today with Jo the professional organiser. She was such a lovely lady and was so helpful in sharing what was involved in setting up an organising business. I came away feeling quite excited and full of ideas and possibilities which is always a good thing. I now have to come up with a business plan and see how viable it will be and what the start-up costs are. I'm going to keep exploring this idea as I think it gives me a lot of scope to do things I love and it doesn't require a huge amount of initial outlay.

I think if I want to start a business I need to become more assertive so that's an area I need to work on. And I hate the idea of having to market myself but I'll have to get over that too if I want to do something for myself.

I haven't ruled out the idea of getting a conventional job but so far none of the jobs I've seen have inspired me. I feel energized and excited thinking about my own business even though I have no clue what I'm doing. I was so confident that I didn't want to start my own business before, but it's what I keep being drawn to so I think I'm moving in that direction, just very slowly.

I think the act of exploring these options has really been good for me. I don't sit down and talk about what I want very often and verbalizing it to a perfect stranger was very therapeutic for me. I think it's the act of making space to explore my thoughts and feelings about work that's so helpful. I'm realising how little time I took for this type of thing before and how important it is to me.

On my way to meet the lady I listened to The Lazy Genius Way audio book. Although I'm struggling a bit with some of the book there are some great concepts in there that I am going to use to simplify my life. Today's chapter was called

Essentialize and her top tips were to:

  1. Name what matters

  2. Remove what's in the way

  3. Keep only the essentials

So I'm going to do this for my job search. I'm going to name what matters to me about a career, remove what's in the way of achieving that and keep only the essentials.

My quote for today is “The way of the Essentialist means living by design, not by default. Instead of making choices reactively, the Essentialist deliberately distinguishes the vital few from the trivial many, eliminates the nonessentials, and then removes obstacles so the essential things have clear, smooth passage. In other words, Essentialism is a disciplined, systematic approach for determining where our highest point of contribution lies, then making execution of those things almost effortless.” ― Greg McKeown, Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less. This is an awesome book if you haven't read it, I highly recommend it. I am going to dig it out and read it again now that I have a business idea in mind. Perhaps it will help catalyst me towards that goal.

My photo for today is of a roll of my fabulous Who Gives a Crap toilet paper because that's about as essential as it gets.
